Yup. Kaolinite is the primary ingredient in clay. And it is, indeed, a silicate, just like glass.
My ceramics professor made us memorize the molecular formula for kaolinite: Al 2 Si 2 O 5 (OH) 4

One is less likely to break than the other. Tempered is very strong, but one chip can do it in. Ordinary glass might not be as tough, but a chip won’t destroy it. And in the case of the toilet, I’d imagine the glass would be so thick that strength wouldn’t be an issue.
It’s a safety tossup. Something that is less likely to break (under those circumstances) but will cause serious injury if it does, vs a more sensitive glass that will be relatively safe because it shatters.

No I do not
